Why I Do What I Do

I think what I really love to do, what makes me tick and always has, is sharing experiences, literature, art, or history with others, especially when I am teaching them how to get the most out of it, or am entertaining them with the story of how I came to experience or enjoy the topic, and if I get to travel prior to, during or subsequent to this interchange, all the better. I really want to spend my waning years doing that; working, sharing, doing something that I enjoy that much. I have never had a job, not in 37 years of working for a living, (50 years old, started when I was 13 working for T. Brewers dad and Roy Gatlin etc.) and have never had a job that I liked, that I looked forward to in the morning. Now, it seems that I may . . .

The Book

Torna is a 'what if', speculative narrative. What if the gov'ts and big businesses of the world had put the effort into space exploration to really go somewhere, in a co-operative effort, like the effort put into putting a man on the moon. Instead of wasting 1,000,000,000,000s of dollars, if they had followed up the Apollo and Soyuz programs with the same efforts, and the technology advanced like we see computer and other technology advancing, the results would have been phenomenal; just look at the difference between today's cell phones and the old rotary-dial phones of yesterday, or even the difference between a cell phone and Brainiac.

What if society didn't have nationalistic or financial competition influencing every major decision? What if people didn't have to see the Pope calling every media station in Europe to come see him do a little act of kindness that you or I do every day without thinking about it. What if barn-raisings, long healthy life, and home ownership were everyday things, and we had time to pursue the arts, or adventure, or whatever?

That's what Torna is about; that, and what it is worth to save it.

What You'll Find Here

This site will have information on all the characters and locations in the book. We'll have interactive maps and some spectacular photographs and artwork related to the book. My blog will always have something new and interesting, and as the book progresses and more fans join the group we'll have opportunities to chat, to get to know each other, and see how we can have some fun with all this.

Read It Free

Here's the thing: a book without readers is just so much paper and paste. An author needs fans in the same way that a musician or an actor needs fans. The reason radio and television are still free is because it creates fans (it's not because of advertising; that's just a vicious rumour.)

My book will need fans to be a raving success. Just like with radio and TV, the answer is to give it away free. The Read It Free page has all the details, and Chapter One is online now!
